2. Amritsar

With a colossal amount of bloodshed and sufferings streaking on the pages of the history of Amritsar, when we talk about the freedom movement, the city of Amritsar is of huge historical importance. With being home to Jallianwala Bagh along with the terrific Wagah Border, the city has seen some really gruesome deaths and is a harsh reminder of all the sacrifices and brutal sufferings of the ones who fell victim of the Britishers. The bullet holes on the public garden walls of the Jallianwala Bagh, subsist as a heartfelt reminiscence of the indiscriminate firing which resulted into taking the lives of the unarmed citizens, who were assembled together to celebrate the joy of the Punjabi New Year in 1919. It is a place of national importance, which houses an eternal flame, that symbolises a mark of respect for the ones who lost their lives in the tragedy.

In the evening you can head to the Wagah Border to see the detailed retreat ceremony of the 'lowering of the flags', which is held every evening since the year 1959. Bring out the patriot in you, and join the personnel and sing patriotic songs. This is the place you definitely must visit on Republic Day and show your gratitude to the thousands of border security forces who put their lives at risk to save us.

3. Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad in Gujarat is the hometown of the great freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi who has seen India's struggle for freedom in a true sense. You can pay homage and experience everything about Gandhi's role in the history of India's freedom by visiting the picturesque Sabarmati Ashram that is located at a distance of 5 km from Ahmedabad.

The Ashram, built on the banks of the Sabarmati river, is the key point for several Indian Freedom Movements. The Ashram has now been transformed into a museum for the visitors so that they can sneak a peek in Gandhi's life. On Republic Day, all the people there gather together to hoist the flag, which all of a sudden brings the patriotic spirit within.

4. Port Blair, Andaman And Nicobar Islands

It was a once infamous prison of the remote archipelago in the Andaman and Nicobar, the Cellular Jail, which depicts a dark reminiscence of the Britishers in the Indian subcontinent. A well-conserved monument which has now become national and historical importance used to be one of the most dreaded colonial prison, found in the middle of the sea, consumed by the British to torture prisoners, who served life sentences in solitary confinement. The jail is now open for everyone as a National Memorial and a segment of it is converted into a museum. The museum has everything from an art gallery, a Netaji Gallery to a library on the Freedom Movement. The Cellular Jail now stands there as a memory of the struggles and sacrifices of everyone who fought for us.

And only if the walls could speak, would they portray the sufferings of the prisoners over the years and how that place smells their bravery.
